Former Butler Great Tretez Kinnaird Runs Fastest 1000m Time in NCAA, Named Big Ten Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After a strong opening weekend for the Indiana track and field team, three IU student-athletes have been honored by the Big Ten as athletes of the week, the conference announced today.

 

Redshirt junior Sophie Gutermuth earned Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honors following her win in the pole vault at the Hoosier Open. Gutermuth’s clearance of 4.22m (13-10) set a new IU school record and is the top mark in the NCAA this season. The performance was also a Gladstein Fieldhouse facility record and Hoosier Open meet record.

 

Freshman Jill Whitman experienced success in her first collegiate track and field meet. Whitman won the mile run in a time of 4:57.75 to earn Track Athlete of the Week honors. Whitman’s time is the second fastest in the NCAA this season.

 

Sophomore Tretez Kinnaird also earned Track Athlete of the Week honors after his victory in the 1,000m run at the Hoosier Open. Kinnaird’s time of 2:23.84 is the second fastest time in school history and leads the NCAA this season. Kinnaird, the 2014 Junior National Champion in the 800m, was also part of the Hoosiers 4X400-meter relay that ran the sixth fastest time in the NCAA.

 

In all the Hoosiers had 10 student-athletes set times or marks in the top-10 in school history at their opening meet on Dec. 12.

 

Up next the Hoosiers will host an intrasquad meet on Jan. 10 and then host the annual Indiana-Purdue dual meet onJan. 17. Both meets will be run at Gladstein Fieldhouse, next to Assembly Hall.
