Tabb's Will Mulherin, an All-State finisher in 2006, is looking in top form in championship season again as he scored an upset win at the Region I Meet at Loriella Park (Photo by Brandon Miles) Bay Rivers District boys fared better than their female counterparts at the Region I meet Thursday at Loriella Park in Fredericksburg. As expected, Jamestown ran away with the boys’ team crown, placing four runners in the top five. But the non-Eagle among that group won the 5-kilometer race: Tabb’s Will Mulherin in 16:25.71. Longtime Tabb coach George Coulter enjoyed Mulherin's showing. "He just ran with a lot more determination (than he did in the district meet) and stayed with it the whole way," Coulter said. "He didn't look like he was under a lot of stress in the lead. I was quite pleased with his performance. Read full story...
The Jamestown boys can almost treat the Bay Rivers District Meet as a time trial with likely only a few individuals in the district able to break up their top five. The Jamestown girls have an excellent shot at joining the boys as district champions, but it will be more of a fight for the title with New Kent and Tabb looking to keep it very close. Jamestown coach Howard Townsend also has two of the district individual favorites leading both of his respective squads with juniors Andrew Colley and Rachel Apostles.
The Lee-Davis Subvarsity Invitational served as a low key meet for many teams getting in a final meet for some of their developing runners heading into the district championships. However, the varsity girls individual battle was anything but low key with more than a handful of some of the state's better runners battling it out on the Pole Green 5K course. A pack of six was still together till the very end until Tallwood's Octavia Rinehardt and Hanover's Lauren Hopper streaked to the finish line with Rinehardt coming out with a narrow win in 18:50 over Hopper at 18:41. Hopper paced the Hanover girls to a team title over several other Central Region teams hoping to make it out of the regional meet next month. Mark Merritt looked to be in top form at Pole Green as he led his new team at Cosby to the team title with a 16:10 individual win of his own. After a one year hiatus, the Newport News Invitational is back at Newport News Park this weekend. Maggie Walker looks to be the dominant squad for the girls led by a possible 1-2 individual finish from Susannah Piersol and Clarissa Schick. Two of the higher ranked private school teams in Norfolk Academy and Peninsula Catholic look to fight out for the top three places. Tabb's Will Mulherin, Gloucester's Doug Fenstermacher, and Mills Godwin's Brian Welch are the top individual runners coming among the boys for the Newport News Invite.Newport News Invite Team List
