The Mount Vernon girls’ track and field team needed a strong final leg in the 4x400 to get past Squalicum with a 74-73 win at Mount Vernon on Wednesday.
Last Saturday, November 3, 2007, the Washington state cross-country championships were held at Sun Willows golf course in Pasco, WA. The day was a disappointment for many but a wondrous event for others. Ruby Roberts, sophomore, of Kingston High School took first in the Girls’ 2A division with a time of 18:39.The day was also a great victory for Bronwyn Crossman, senior, of Squalicum High School, who defended her title in the 3A Girls’ division with a time of 18:46.Miles Unterreiner, senior, of Gig Harbor High School also found great personal victory in Pasco this year, when he won the Boys’ 4A race with a time of 15:39.
— Bronwyn Crossman didn’t need to look over her shoulder this time. The Squalicum senior easily won her second straight Class 3A state cross country meet individual title on Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. “She’s the best I’ve ever coached,” said Storm coach Tim Irvin, who began coaching in 1977. “She’s tough as nails.” Crossman was never challenged in the 3-kilometer race. She broke away from the pack at the one-mile mark and had opened an insurmountable 30- second lead shortly after two miles.
Bronwyn Crossman can have a strong meet even while not running at full strength. Crossman led the Squalicum girls’ cross country team to a win against Bellingham, Burlington- Edison and Nooksack Valley on Wednesday at Cornwall Park.
SILVER LAKE — The Squalicum girls’ cross country squad did something on Saturday at the Mount Baker Invite no other team could lay claim to: the Storm placed four runners in the top 20. But that wasn’t enough to win the meet at Silver Lake Park. Squalicum finished a distant fourth to Veradale Central Valley.
The cross country courses out west are really starting to heat up! Newly minted 1-2 ranked boys, German Fernandez and Luke Puskerda, opened their seasons with blazing course records, while on the girl's side Christine Babcock broke her own meet record this past weekend impressively. The West looks great, but there is a long way to go.
Bronwyn Crossman broke the course record that she had previously set last year to highlight an impressive opening performance by the Squalicum cross country team against Meridian, Lynden Christian and Ferndale on Wednesday at Whatcom Falls Park.
With nearly half of the Foot Locker West National Team returning from '06, the expectations are high in '07. Jordan Hasay is the number one ranked harrier of course, after her however, the rankings get a little more complex. Every year the West seems to have a lot of young ladies who put up some very impressive numbers, and this year should be no different.
