Today is the National Letter of Intent day, with high school athletes from all around the state will be deciding which college colors they will be representing in the fall. We have posted as many of the signings as we caught wind of, and asked a few of the athletes some questions to gain some insight on what their futures hold.
For brothers Futsum Zienasellassie and Bahlbi Gebreyohanns, running at Northern Arizona University as part of the cross country and track and field teams is part of their American dream, being lived out in the mountains of Flagstaff, a far cry—both in distance and in climate—from their home country of Eritrea. Back in the fall of 2007, HBO aired a moving documentary about distance runner and U.S. Olympian Joseph “Lopez” Lomong. It told the story of the terrifying early life of the African native, who was kidnapped at the age of 6 by rebel soldiers of the Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA) and put in a refugee camp miles away from his home.
