Tolhurst Named To Academic All-American Track Team

NEW ORLEANS, LA. -- Drake senior Leyden Tolhurst (Auckland, New Zealand) has been named to the 2009 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I Men's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Team.

The accounting major was honored for his academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track and field season.

Tolhurst capped his senior campaign by winning the 1,500-meter run at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championship in Terre Haute, Ind., May 17. He also was fourth in the 800.

He also advanced to the NCAA Midwest Regional where he was seventh in the 1,500. He achieved a regional qualifying mark en route to a third-place finish in the university-college 1,500 at the Drake Relays, being clocked in a personal best 3:47.29.

Tolhurst anchored Drake to a first-place finish in the distance medley relay at the 2009 MVC Indoor Championship, while placing runner-up in the mile.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic, a student athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I indoor qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
