Men, women third in opener

The Angelo State cross country season got underway Saturday morning as both the Rams and Rambelles placed third at the Texas State Invitational in San Marcos.

Senior Brian Carroll paced the Rams as he placed 13th in the five-mile race in a time of 27:29. Randal Guinn (28:01) and Isac Valdez (28:23) finished close behind, placing 18th and 19th, respectively, with Colton Dieterich (28:53) placing 22nd and Robert Hummingbird (29:34) placing 29th to round out the top five Rams. Hogan Campbell (29:48) would place 31st and Nick Wargo (30:24) would round out the ASU men at 34th.

Texas claimed the title of the men's race with 17 points, placing the top four runners. Incarnate Word was second with 41 points ahead of ASU's 77 points. Prairie View A&M was fourth (112), Texas-Permian Basin fifth (123), host Texas State sixth (173) and Schreiner was seventh (194).

On the women's side, it was freshman Emeline Crutcher pacing the Rambelles with a 11th-place finish the three-mile run in a time of 19:36. Brittney Heath (19:51) placed 18th with Paige Massingill (19:59) close behind in 19th place. Alyssa Priest (20:14) placed 23rd, Jessica Boudreau (21:02) was 29th, Kami Orsak (21:46) was 38th and Brittney Welchon (22:37) placed 45th.

Texas also won the women's team title, finishing with 16 points, placing seven of the top eight runners. Incarnate Word was second with 71 points and finished with 89 points. Texas State was fourth (107), Prairie View A&M fifth (151), St. Mary's sixth (157), Texas-Permian Basin seventh (167) and Texas Lutheran eighth (177).

The Rams and Rambelles return to action Friday, Sept. 25, as the two teams travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
