The Angelo State men's and women's cross country teams returned to action Friday evening as the Rams and Rambelles competed in the Islander Splash, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Rams placed fourth in a five-mile race comprised heavily of NCAA Division I programs, while the ASU women was the top NCAA D-II finisher as well, placing eighth.
Nate Gonzales paced the Rams, placing 15th out of 78 runners with a time of 27:02. Brian Carroll finished in 18th place (27:10) and Shannon Cunningham was 25th (27:24). Randal Guinn finished 32nd (27:41), Isac Valdez 53rd (28:51), Nick Wargo 57th (29:10), Hogan Campbell 60th (29:32) and Robert Hummingbird 63rd (29:54).
McNeese State claimed the men's title with 28 points, placing four of the top five scorers, while host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi placed second with 45 points and Texas-Arlington third with 109 points. The Rams tallied 118 points for fourth place.
Brittney Heath paced the Rambelles in 51st in the 99-runner field with a time of 19:18 with Emeline Crutcher right behind in 52nd place at 19:20. Alyssa Priest finished 57th (19:37), Jessica Boudrea 66th (20:07), Paige Massingill 67th (20:12), Kami Orsak 81st (21:42) and Brittney Welchon 84th (22:00).
Texas claimed the women's five-kilometer run with 28 points. Rice was second with 42 points and host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was third with 78 points. The Rambelles scored 222 points.
The two teams return to action Friday, Oct. 2, when the Rams and Rambelles compete in a meet hosted by North Texas in Denton.
