Mugo, Leitich Named OVC Runners of the Week

Senior Stanley Mugo and freshman Picoty Leitich were named OVC Cross Country Runners of the Week on Tuesday
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University senior Stanley Mugo and freshman Picoty Leitich were named the Ohio Valley Conference Male and Female Cross Country Runners of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday afternoon, the league office announced.

Mugo placed 21st out of 334 runners Saturday at the Greater Louisville Classic, finishing the 8K course in a time of 24:37.84. His performance led the Colonels to an eighth place finish at a meet which featured 38 teams and was billed as the largest collegiate cross country meet ever contested in the south.

Despite finishing second at last year’s OVC Cross Country Championships and being named the 2009 Co-OVC Male Track Athlete of the Year in the spring, this is Mugo’s first career OVC Cross Country Runner of the Week honor.

Leitich finished 13th out of 291 runners in the women’s race at the Greater Louisville Classic this weekend. The freshman from Nairobi completed the 5K course in a time of 17:45.16, 41 seconds faster than her previous personal best. Leitich’s performance paced the women to a seventh place finish out of 35 teams.

This is already Leitich’s second OVC Cross Country Runner of the Week honor of her young Colonel career. She was named runner of the week on Sept. 22 after her stellar performance at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic.

The Cross Country Colonels will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 when they travel to Terre Haute, Ind. to face some of the top teams in the country at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet.
