RICHMOND, Ky.
– Following its performance at the NCAA Pre-Nationals last weekend, the Eastern Kentucky University men’s cross country team jumped six spots, from 14th to eighth, in the Southeast Region rankings according to the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll.

The Southeast Region is one of the largest of the nine regions in the nation, consisting of all NCAA Division I schools from the states of Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The region also features all Atlantic Coast Conference schools.

EKU is ranked behind only Virginia Tech, William and Mary, Duke, Louisville, N.C. State, Virginia and North Carolina.

The Colonels are ranked ahead of such notable teams as Kentucky, Richmond, Davidson and Liberty.

Junior Wesley Ruttoh led the men’s team against the best competition in the country at the Pre-Nationals meet, placing 64th of out 237 runners and covering the 8K course in a time of 24:40.5.

Senior Chris Rengifo also emerged as a factor last Saturday. The Woodbridge, Ontario native was the Colonels’ second finisher, placing 105th in a time of 25:11.4.

Senior Stanley Mugo, the Colonels’ traditional number one runner, suffered a minor injury at the meet but was still able to finish 114th in a time of 25:15.3.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams have this weekend off before both squads attempt to win their fourth consecutive OVC titles Saturday, Oct. 31 in Nashville.
