ACU puts long streak on line

CANYON – The ACU men will try to extend their dominance of the Lone Star Conference cross country championship meet this weekend as the league gathers on the West Texas A&M campus
for the annual championship meet.

The women's 6-kilometer championship race will get started at 9:30 a.m. with the men's 8-kilometer championship race set for a 10:15 a.m. start.

The ACU men have won 18 straight conference titles, but if a fully healthy Wildcat team doesn't show up to run that streak could be in jeopardy.

Tarleton State beat the Wildcats in the team race two weeks ago at the Naimadu Pre-Regional Invitational, although the Wildcats didn't have Cleophas Tanui for the meet.

The Wildcats' second-place finish to Tarleton State dropped them to No. 4 in the latest NCAA Division II South Central Region rankings and No. 18 in the nation. Tarleton is ranked one spot above the Wildcats in both the region and the nation.

ACU senior Daniel Maina returns to Canyon as the defending champion. He took home individual honors last year and was followed by junior Cleophas Tanui as the Wildcats won the LSC title for an 18th straight time.

On the women's side, Midwestern State is the favorite to capture its second straight league championship. The Mustangs are ranked No. 8 in the region in a down year for LSC women's cross country.

The Wildcat women have struggled all season, but freshmen Chloe Susset will look to contend for a top-10 finish on Saturday.
