MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women's cross country team won its second-straight Atlantic Region Championship on Saturday morning from the Lambs Creek 6K course in Mansfield and will now advance to the national championships in two weeks.
Sophomore
Neely Spence coasted to the women's individual title, turning in a time of 20:14 that edged Millersville's Priscilla Jennings by 26 seconds. Junior
Mary Dell finished third, just four seconds behind Jennings, with a time of 20:45. Both women earn USTFCCCA All-Region honors.
Junior
Abby Huber and sophomore
Katie Frey finished in 24th and 25th place by posting identical times of 22:38. The pair started strong and were among the Top 15 runners through the mid-portion of the race.
Perhaps the most important finish for the Lady Raiders was the team's No. 5 runner, junior
Lindsey Hollenshead. Her 33rd-place finish helped Shippensburg keep its distance from the other schools as the team's No. 6 runner finished in 59th place.
Shippensburg totaled 86 points to edge PSAC rival Kutztown by 14 points and Bloomsburg by 34 points. Head coach
Steve Spence has guided the Lady Raiders to back-to-back titles for the second time in program history and its fourth regional championship in program history.
The Lady Raiders will run at the Division II National Championships on November 21 from the campus of Southern Indiana University. The women's meet is set to start at noon. All seven of SU's finishers are eligible to run at the meet with the top five qualifying toward team points.
