Sang earns top LSC honor


RICHARDSON -- Midwestern State's Sydnee Cole and Abilene Christian's Amos Sang were chosen as the 2009 Lone Star Conference Cross Country Runners of the Year.  The awards were announced Friday following a vote of the league's head coaches.

The Mustangs Cole was the female winner, while the Wildcats Sang claimed male honors.

Sang, who won the LSC and regional individual titles, finished fourth at the NCAA Division II National Championships, running the ten-kilometer course in 30:48.0 for All-American acclaim.  The junior from Eldoret, Kenya, topped the field at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional in 29:53.23, more than a minute ahead of his nearest challenger and claimed the conference title with a time of 24:44 on the eight-kilometer course.

Cole, a junior from Phillipsburg, Kan., claimed the school's first LSC individual championship with a time of 23:02.5, helping the Mustangs to their second-straight team title.  She placed 15th at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional as she completed the looped six-kilometer course in 22:34.62.
