The High Point University women's cross country team placed eighth out of 15 teams at the Blue Ridge Open hosted by Appalachian State on Friday in Boone, N.C. Junior
Emily Webb (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) was the first Panther across the finish line in 35th and she was followed closely by seniors
Joya Canfield (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) and
Geneva Winterink (Oshawa, Ontario/Paul Dwyer Catholic).
It was a very strong field on the women's side, with Duke taking the win ahead of Virginia Tech, UNC Wilmington, Appalachian State and VMI.
"The HPU women had a good race and I was really happy to see the way they worked together," said head coach
Mike Esposito. "Emily is really good on raceday and Joya and Geneva have been very consistent this season. The team finish was pretty good. We beat some teams in our conference, which was good heading into the championship on our home course in two weeks.
Webb took 35th in a time of 19:12.27 to lead the Panthers. Canfield placed 42nd with a time of 19:16.63 and Winterink was 44th in 19:17.75.
Freshman
Vanessa Piacente (Toronto, Ontario/Cardinal Newman Catholic) has continued to get stronger throughout the season, as she placed 69th in 19:49.69. Junior transfer
Brittany Killough (Bowling Green, Va./JJ Kelly) was the fifth and final scorer for HPU, taking 84th in 20:01.46.
Also in the gold race for HPU were
Monica Delizo (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery), who took 91st in 20:10.03 and
Kelsey Fraser (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport), who placed 98th in 20:24.28.
The Panthers also fielded a full second team in the open race, placing third. HPU was led in that race by freshman
Kelsey Paine (Daniels, W.Va./Shady Spring), who took fourth in 20:04.73.
Kelsey Hunt (Bedford, N.H./Manchester West) placed 11th in 20:13.69 and
Dani Paul (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) was one spot behind in 20:18.55. Freshman
Francesca Carrone (Basking Ridge, N.J./Basking Ridge) placed 26th in 20:48.20 and
Kelsey Hinchliffe (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) took 45th in 21:45.99. The final HPU finisher was
Dianna Bell (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford), who placed 74th in 25:24.32.
The Blue Ridge Open was HPU's final race before hosting the Big South Championship on Oct. 31 at Shady Oaks on High Point Road in Winston-Salem.
