Junior TJ Brancaccio (Norcross, Ga., Norcross ) finished second in the pole vault and junior Corey Grove (Chambersburg, Pa., Chambersburg) set a personal best in the 1,000-meter in the first day of the Virginia Tech Invitational.

Brancaccio cleared 15'3 in the pole vault, finishing second in the event. Grove finished seventh in the 1,000-meter with a time of 2:33.94

“We are still getting rust off after winter break,” said head coach Mike Esposito. “It is a good starting point and we will hopefully continue to do well tomorrow and build for the rest of the season. There is great competition here and I am looking forward to tomorrow, especially the 3,000-meter with Josh Morgan, Jevin Monds and Jacob Smith. We also expect Neal Darmody to do well in the 5,000-meter. It is a small field but very talented.

HPU will compete Saturday in the final day of the Virginia Tech Invitational. Senior Josh Morgan (Asheville, N.C., TC Roberson), junior Jevin Monds (Whitecourt, Alberta, Hilltop) and freshman Jacob Smith (Brockville, Ontario, Thousand Islands Secondary School) will all compete in the 3,000-meter on Saturday. This is the first meet of the indoor season for the distance runners. Morgan and Smith earned All-Conference honors for cross country and Smith was the 2009 Big South Freshman of the Year. Senior Neal Darmody (Gaithersburg, Md., Quince Orchard) will compete in the 5,000-meter on Saturday. Darmody also earned All-Conference honors for cross country.
