Senior Joya Canfield (Berlin, Md., Stephen Decatur) set a personal best in the 1,000-meter in the first day of the Virginia Tech Invitational at the Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. Canfield finished seventh in the event in 2:59.36.

Freshman Vanessa Piacente (Toronto, Ontario, Cardinal Newman Catholic) placed 10th in 1,000-meter with a time of 3:04.09 and finished 11th in the 1 mile in 5:11.72.

“Joya's performance in the 1,000-meter sets her up well for a fast 800-meter tomorrow,” said head coach Mike Esposito. “Vanessa also did well, running the mile first and having less than a half hour to rest before the 1,000.”

The Panthers are back in action Saturday for the final day of the Virginia Tech Invitational. Manika Gamble (Jacksonville, N.C., Jacksonville ) will compete in the 200-meter and 400-meter. Christina Fenske (Stuarts Draft, Va., Stuarts Draft), a sophomore, will compete in the high jump. She cleared 5'5 in the high jump for the event win at the Liberty Kickoff. Canfield will run the 800-meter.
