HPU wraps up competition at Virginia Tech Invitational

Joya Canfield (Berlin, Md., Stephen Decatur)
was the top finisher for the High Point University women's track & field team as the Panthers wrapped up competition at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Saturday.

Canfield finished third in the 800-meter with a time of 2:16.40. Canfield also set a personal best in the 1,000-meter (2:59.36) in the first day of the meet.

“Joya had two good races this weekend,” said head coach Mike Esposito. “She is setting herself up for really good spring and I am very pleased with how she competed. Manika Gamble (Jacksonville, N.C., Jacksonville ) was also close to a personal best in the 200-meter. That bodes well for her season as well. She is running much faster than last year.”

Gamble finished the 200-meter in 25.62, good for 12th place. She also finished the 400-meter in ninth place in 58.05. Sophomore Christina Fenske (Stuarts Draft, Va., Stuarts Draft) cleared 5'3 in the high jump, finishing in 11th place.

On Friday, freshmanVanessa Piacente (Toronto, Ontario, Cardinal Newman Catholic) placed 10th in 1,000-meter with a time of 3:04.09 and finished 11th in the 1 mile in 5:11.72.

The Panthers are back in action Jan. 22 and 23 at the ETSU Niswongwer Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.
