Upstate Challenge Schedule

ITHACA, N.Y. -- On the final weekend of the semester break, the Cornell track and field teams will put their training to the test when Cornell plays host to its only home scored track meet of the season, the Upstate Challenge, on Saturday at Barton Hall. Cornell will play host to teams from Syracuse, Buffalo, Colgate, Cortland and Ithaca College in the six-team scored meet.

The women's team is coming off a fine performance last weekend at Penn State, where senior Jessica Weyman set a meet record in the 500m. Weyman's time was the third-best ever at Cornell in the event. In all, eight Cornell women broke the ECAC meet qualifying standard and 25 athletes claimed a top-10 finish against quality competition that included Penn State, Michigan State, Seton Hall, Rutgers, Georgetown and Penn.

Similarly, the men's team had an outstading meet at Penn State last weekend, with freshman Nick Wade setting a school record in his first collegiate career race at 1000m. Senior Gary Jones claimed the Big Red's lone victory at the meet, winning the triple jump with the seventh-best performance all-time. In all, the Cornell men had 17 athletes better the IC4A qualifying standards on the day.

In addition to the Upstate Challenge, Barton Hall will play host to the 43rd annual Hartshorne Masters Mile from 10:30 a.m. to 12:45. The event features competition and racing among men and women aged 40 and over. The event will include five regional races and four 'elite' races in which some of the top Masters runners in the world will compete. Among the entries in the "elite" field are Jim Sorensen, last year's winner who has run a 4:03 mile as a Masters competitor, Tony Young, with his 4:06 mile time, and Charlie Kern, who won last year's men's world 1500m title in Lahti, Finland.
