Blair highlights day for ACU

LUBBOCK -- The ACU men's and women's track and field teams added more qualifiers for the NCAA Division II indoor championship meet Saturday at the Texas Tech Invitational at the Athletic Training Center.

The ACU men's team saw four athletes post provisional qualifying marks, while the women's team saw one athlete post an automatic qualifying mark.

Senior Jessica Blair was the star of the day for the Wildcats as she won both the pole vault and the triple jump.  Blair had already automatically qualified for the national meet in the pole vault, but she posted one of the top marks in the nation Saturday with her winning vault of 13 feet, 1.50 inches.  She also won the triple jump with an automatic qualifying mark of 39-3.00.

Wanda Hutson finished fourth in the 55 meters in 7.02 seconds, but she has already provisionally qualified for the national meet in the 60 meters.

On the men's side, junior Nick Jones finished fifth in the shot put with a mark of 54-10.0 to provisionally qualify for the national meet.  Jones is the two-time defending national champion in the discus.

Transfer hurdler Kevin Johnson finished eighth in the 55-meter hurdles in a provisional qualifying time of 7.72 seconds.  Andrew McDowell was second in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.44, but he has a better provisional qualifying time in the 60-meter hurdles for the indoor championship meet.

Desmond Jackson finished third in the 55 meters with a provisional qualifying time of 6.31 seconds, while Amos Sang was third in the mile in a provisional qualifying time of 4:11.21.

Ramon Sparks was fifth in the triple jump, bettering his provisional qualifying status with a mark of 49-6.50.
