Fisher, Brancaccio lead HPU at Carolina Classic

COMPLETE RESULTS

The High Point University men's track & field team competed at the Dick Taylor Carolina Classic at UNC on Friday. TJ Brancaccio (Norcross, Ga./Norcross ) finished fourth in the pole vault and Alex Fisher (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd ) finished 10th in the 60-meter hurdles. Saturday's events at the Carolina Classic have been cancelled due to inclement weather.

“TJ and Jacob Mathews (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) continue to be consistent in the pole vault,” said head coach Mike Esposito. “Big jumps are ahead for them. Alex also had another good meet in the hurdles. He was third at the indoor championships last year and he is on pace to be in the top three in conference again. The freshmen in the mile weren't where we wanted but despite Dakota Peachee (Garner, N.C./West Johnston) stumbling he showed real fight and stayed in the race.”

Brancaccio cleared 14'11 to finish the pole vault in fourth place. Matthews finished the pole vault in eighth place, clearing 14'5.25.

Fisher ran the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries in 8.52, qualifying him for the finals. In the finals he finished 10th again with a time of 8.5 John Taylor (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) also ran the event finish the semifinals in 8.65 but did not make the finals.

In the mile freshmen Peachee, Stuart Edmonds (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) and Seth Harwood (Columbia, Md./Atholton) finished ninth, 11th and 22nd, respectively. Despite stumbling, Peachee got back in the race and finished in 4:30.05. Edmonds came in at 4:30.76 and Harwood in 4:47.61.

Rob Pitts finished the 1,000-meter in 2:48.86, good for 11th place.

The Panthers will have next weekend off before they compete at the UNC Invitational on Feb. 12. Esposito will take distance runners Jesse Cherry, Cole Atkins and Jacob Smith to Seattle, Wash. for the Husky Classic while the rest of the squad competes at UNC.
