School Records Continue to Fall at Clemson Games

CLEMSON, S.C. - College of Charleston women's track & field broke three more school records at the Clemson Games on Friday.

Junior Brynne Johnson (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) began Friday's meet by placing fourth in the pentathlon with 3,084 points. Her total breaks the school record by 21 points, which she previously set at the 2008 Southern Conference Indoor Championships, hosted by Clemson. Johnson surpassed conference foes Carlyn Wright and Jettana Thomas of Western Carolina, who finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Freshmen Jelain McArthur (Laurens, S.C./Laurens District) and Chelsea Taylor (Seneca, S.C./Seneca) continued to shine, each breaking school records for the second consecutive meet. Just one week after setting CofC records in the 60-meter hurdles and triple jump, McArthur broke the record in the long jump. Her jump of 18'1 2/3" gave her a third-place finish and passed the previous school record of 17'3¾", set in 2007 by Saskia Kalmeijer.

McArthur also competed in the 60-meter hurdles, where she advanced to the finals after recording an eighth-place time of 9.17 seconds in the preliminaries. She finished eighth in the finals in 9.48 seconds, giving her the top four times in Cougar history. Junior Isabel Boersma (Franklin, Tenn./Ravenwood) also participated in the hurdles, placing 17th a personal-best time of 9.48; .28 of a second faster than her previous personal record.

Taylor placed third in the pole vault after clearing a record-breaking height of 11'6" on her second attempt. Taylor was named the Southern Conference Field Athlete of the Week after clearing 11'5¾" to set a new school record last week at the UNC Classic.

Middle-distance runner Emily Nagle (Annapolis, Md./Richmond) led a trio of Cougars in the mile race, finishing seventh with a time of 5:23.40. Sophomore Alyssa D'Orazio (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) placed 10th in 5:31.85 while redshirt-freshman Tierney Willard (Midlothian, Va./James River) came in 14th with a time of 5:44.20.

Competition continues at the Clemson Games on Saturday, beginning with the shot put and the triple jump at noon.
