Sparks' effort caps solid day

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Ramon Sparks posted the best collegiate triple jump mark in the nation Saturday as he won the event at the New Mexico Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Sparks won the triple jump Saturday afternoon with a jump of 53 feet, 0.0 inches to automatically qualify for the NCAA Division II indoor national championship meet.  The mark is also the nation's best collegiate triple jump this season.  The previous best collegiate mark this season was 52-8.25 by Kyon Foster of Michigan State.

Sparks had a productive day as he also finished sixth in the long jump with a provisional qualifying mark of 23-10.75.

Desmond Jackson won the 60 meters with a time of 6.79, but he had already provisionally qualified for the national indoor championship meet in the event.  Andrew McDowell finished third in the 60 hurdles in 8.07 after qualifying for the final with an 8.00 in a preliminary heat.  McDowell, however, has already automatically qualified for the national championship meet in the event.

Nick Jones finished second in the shot put with a mark of 54-2.50, but he has already provisionally qualified for the national indoor championship meet with a throw of 54-10.0 last week.

On the women's side on Saturday, Wanda Hutson (60 meters) and Elizabeth Buyse (pole vault) posted provisional qualifying marks for the indoor championships.

Hutson finished seventh in the 60 meters with a provisional qualifying time of 7.57, while Buyse was third in the pole vault with a provisional qualifying mark of 1-7.75.

Both ACU teams also competed in the Lobo Challenge in Albuquerque on Friday, and both teams added more qualifiers.

On the women's side, Destinee Nixon finished fourth in the triple jump with a provisional qualifying mark of 37-5.75, while Hutson was fourth in the 200 meters with a  provisional time of 25.07, a time that is an improvement over her previous qualifying time.

On the men's side, Jackson posted a provisional qualifying mark of 21.52 on his way to a second-place finish in the 200 meters.  McDowell won the 60 hurdles on Friday with a time of 8.09, while Kevin Johnson was third in 8.24.

ACU will be back in action next weekend at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York City.
