Divinnie Lowers Davidson Mile Record at UNC

2/13/2010 10:58:08 AM | Men's Track & Field

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – #Tom Divinnie# bested his own school record in the mile, finishing in four minutes, 15.48 seconds to lead the Davidson men's track and field team Friday at the Gene Anderson UNC Invitational in Eddie Smith Fieldhouse.

The performance nearly gave the reigning Southern Conference Track Athlete of the month his fourth first-place finish in as many attempts this season. A pair of High Point runners beat him to the line by 0.53 seconds and 0.07 seconds, respectively.

The 'Cats placed a pair in the top 10 of the 3000-meter run. Junior Charlie Schmitt led with a fourth-place finish in 8:47.64, while freshman Demetrios Pagonis placed sixth in 8:49.48.

Senior Peter Bruton moved onto the top-10 performers list in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.57.

"It was nice to see Tom get another school record and for Peter to get on our 800m performer list," said head coach Gary Andrew.

Divinnie has altered the Davidson record books each time he has competed this season. The Brentwood, Tenn. native shattered the school standard in the 3000m on the very same track to open the season on Jan. 23, winning the event in 8:24.47. The very next week, he broke both the mile (4:16.30) and 5000m (14:44.59) records at the Liberty Open and was named the SoCon Male Track Athlete of the Week.

The 'Cats also competed in the sprints and jumps.

"With all of our young guys, especially on the sprint, hurdle and jump side, we're experiencing some growing pains and some inconsistency in our performances," said Andrew. "That said, the guys are gaining valuable experience which will only make us better in the long run."

The meet was the final tune-up before the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held Feb. 25-26 at Clemson.

Notes: Assistant coach Allen Simms competed in the long jump and posted the top mark with a leap of 24 feet, 5 ½ inches (7.45m) … Campbell, Duke, East Carolina, High Point, NC State, UNC and SoCon foe The Citadel were among the schools competing in the meet.
