Leutz Wins Bison Open Heptathlon Title With NCAA Provisional Score

FARGO, N.D. ? North Dakota State sophomore Weston Leutz claimed the heptathlon title with 5,496 points at the Bison Open on Saturday.  He improves his NCAA provisional mark and the second-best all-time score at NDSU.

Junior Ted Rud finished second in the heptathlon with a personal best 5,291 points, ranking third all-time.  Redshirt freshman Ryan Jensen was fourth with 4,447 points.

Sophomore Kevin Jackson and freshman Matt Tetzlaff finished 1-2 in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.13 and 8.14, respectively.  Tetzlaff's final time of 8.13 is ninth on the NDSU all-time performance charts, while Jackson ran a personal best of 8.11 in the preliminaries, ranking eighth all-time.

Jackson also ran a personal best of 6.81 to finish second in the 60 meters.  The time is tied for seventh all-time at NDSU.

In the long jump, junior Doug Scott finished second with a personal best leap of 23-8.  His mark ranks ninth on the NDSU all-time performance charts.

The Bison also claimed the top three spots in the mile run.  Freshman Moses Heppner led the way in a time of 4:17.62.  Junior Eric Stroh was second in 4:18.10 and redshirt freshman Dan Merritt was third in 4:20.77.

Sophomore Travis Fitzke won the 800 meters in 1:55.13 while fellow sophomore Kole Seiler was second in 1:56.64.

NDSU now has a week off before hosting the Summit League Championships Feb. 28-March 1 at the Bison Sports Arena.
