The High Point University women's track & field team was led by sophomore Manika Gamble for the second day in a row at the Virginia Tech Challenge on Saturday in Blacksburg, Va. Gamble recorded HPU's best finish of the day, placing seventh in the 400-meter the day after she set an HPU record in the 200-meter.

"Manika Gamble had a very good weekend and Monica Delizo had a good step forward in the 5K," said HPU head coach Mike Esposito. "Everything didn't go as planned but I'm confident that our coaching staff will have the team ready for the Big South Championship."

Gamble ran the 400-meter in 57.32, her best mark of the season in the event. On Friday Gamble set an HPU record in the 200-meter. Gamble's 200-meter time of 25.04 broke Kandi Givner's HPU record of 25.36 set in 2008. She won her heat and placed 12th overall in the event.

Delizo finished 12th in the 5k with a time of (18:48.32). Emily Webb and Brittany Killough finished eighth (18:25.83) and 13th (18:53.36) in the event, respectively. Webb's times was nearly 30 seconds faster than her finish in the event at ETSU in January.

HPU's freshman trio of Kelsey Paine, Dani Paul and Emma Tobin finished 18th, 19th and 24th in the 800-meter, respectively. Paine's time of 2:23.73 just edged Paul who finished in 2:24.37. Tobin had a time of 2:27.43.

On Friday, senior Joya Canfield won her heat and set an HPU record in the 1,000-meter. Canfield ran a time of 2:54.76 to break Sumiyya Hunter's school record of 2:55.59 set in 2006. Canfield finished ninth overall. Freshman Vanessa Piacente and senior Geneva Winterink also broke 3:00 in the 1,000-meter, running 2:57.04 and 2:59.26, respectively.
