Atabek Earns All-SoCon Honors in 5K as Competition Concludes at Indoor SoCOns

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Freshman Natalie Atabek finished third in the 5,000 meters to earn All-SoCon honors as competition concluded at the 2010 Southern Conference Indoor Championships at the Clemson Indoor Track Friday.

Atabek finished in third with a personal-best time of 17:49.01 in the 5,000 in her first Southern Conference championships to earn All-SoCon honors. She was also named to the All-SoCon Freshman Team in the event and finished in eighth to score points in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:22.56.

"I am extremely proud of Natalie!" head coach Jen Straub said. "To earn All-Southern Conference honors in her first competition is outstanding, and she has an extremely bright future!"

Junior Heather Conarroe finished sixth in the 5,000 meters with a personal-best time of 18:00.86 to score points for the Wildcat women.

"Heather ran an outstanding race today, and she should be very proud!," Straub said.

The Appalachian State men and Western Carolina women won the 2010 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. The title was the seventh for the Mountaineer men since 2000. The Catamount women claimed their sixth championship in program history.
