CONWAY, S.C. – It was a successful weekend for the men’s track and field program in their opening meet of the outdoor season, as they posted 18 top-10 finishes at the Asics Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, S.C.

Following a first day that featured two relay victories, all aspects of head coach Don McGarey’s program were on full display on Saturday. Sophomore Piotr Witczak had perhaps the most impressive individual performance of the weekend for the Owls, finishing second in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:59.86. The Warsaw, Poland, native, was just one of two competitors in the 63-man race to run it in under four minutes.

“Today was a windy day, which made it a little tougher to run, but overall I felt pretty good and I think ran a decent race,” said Witczak, who finished fifth in the One Mile Run at the Atlantic Sun Conference Indoor Championships in February.

Freshman sprinter Tremaine Grant had a runner-up performance of his own on Sunday, taking second place in the 110 meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 14.38 seconds in his collegiate outdoor track debut. Though he finished in second place, his time was faster than the original track record when the day began, which had stood at 14.46 seconds.

The relay teams continued to do well on Sunday, placing fifth and third in the 4x100 meters and 4x400 meters, respectively, with times of 42.05 and 3:20.41.

Senior Josh McNair, who finished sixth in the Hammer Throw on Friday, continued to place in the top of the throwing events, finishing second in the Shot Put and third in the Discus with throws of 49’6.25” and 156’2”, respectively.

Freshman Cameron Zeman placed third in the High Jump on Saturday, clearing a top height of 6'6.75" (2.00 Meters)

The Owls continue their outdoor season on March 26, when they travel to Western Carolina University in Cullowhee to compete in the Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic.
