The High Point University men's track & field team opened the 2010 outdoor season at the Wake Forest Open on Friday in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Panthers' top finisher was senior Josh Morgan, who took second in the 3,000-meter. Freshman Joshua Pelletier broke the HPU record in the javelin.

In his collegiate debut in the javelin, Pelletier threw it 196-2 (59.80 meters) to best the HPU record of 189-3 set by Bill Kimmel in 1987.

Morgan ran a time of 8:26.90 in the 3,000-meter and was edged by Penn's Michael Cunningham, who ran 8:26.74. Behind Morgan in the first heat, junior Jevin Monds placed seventh in 8:38.33, freshman Dakota Peachee took 14th in 8:56.17 and junior Corey Grove placed 15th in 8:56.74. In the second heat of the 3,000-meter, sophomore Michael Ali placed eighth in 9:15.68.

Sophomore Alex Fisher won his heat of the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.98 seconds. He placed ninth in the preliminaries and advanced to Saturday's finals. Fisher also ran a time of 11.72 in the 100-meter dash.

The Panthers had four runners in the 800-meter. Senior Josh Cashman placed sixth in his heat and 32nd overall with a time of 1:56.90. Michael Peavey came in at 2:00.88, Alex Ruano ran 2:01.51, Seth Harwood crossed the line in 2:05.71 and Rob Pitts ran a time of 2:10.84.

Sophomore Ben AuYeung competed in the 100-meter dash (12.05 seconds) and high jump (5-9.75).

The Panthers are back in action for the second day of the Wake Forest Open on Saturday. Fisher will run in the finals of the hurdles, Jacob Mathews and Jacob Ridgway will compete in the pole vault, Mike Feroe will run the 1,500-meter, Justin Conaway and Sebastien Bonnot will compete in the 200-meter dash and the Panthers will field a 4x400 relay team.

Three Panthers are sitting out this week in preparation for running the 10,000-meter next weekend at the Stanford Invitational – Jesse Cherry, Cole Atkins and Neal Darmody.
