Panthers get two top-10 finishes at Wake Forest

The High Point University women's track & field team competed in the Wake Forest Open on Friday in Winston-Salem, N.C. to open the outdoor season. HPU had two top-10 finishes on the day: Manika Gamble took fifth in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles and Geneva Winterink placed eighth in the 3000-meter.

Gamble ran an impressive time of 14.18 in her first 100-meter hurdles race of the season to place fifth in the fastest heat of the day, which turned out to be fifth overall. Gamble will compete in the finals on Saturday and will also compete in the 400-meter hurdles.

Winterink led eight Panthers in the 3,000-meter with a time of 10:31.57. Behind Winterink in the first heat of the night, Emily Webb came in 14th in 10:42.79, Kelsey Hunt placed 23rd in 11:01.90 and Kelsey Fraser took 24th in 11:37.61. In the next heat, Brittany Killough placed second in 10:52.22, just ahead of Monica Delizo, who placed third in 10:53.20. Kaylyn Peck placed fifth in 10:55.00 and Kelsey Hinchliffe took 21st in 12:06.68.

Three HPU runners competed in the 800-meter, as Kelsey Paine clocked in at 2:25.19, Emma Tobin came in at 2:30.61 and Diana Bell ran 2:38.83. In the 100-meter dash, sophomore Lora Robinson ran a time of 12.89 to finish 41st out of 77 runners.

The Panthers had three athletes in Friday's field events. Rachel Webb cleared 9-0.25 to finish eighth in the B section of the pole vault. In the shot put, Kara Boatman placed 31st with a throw of 33'11.25 and Joy Hunt took 35th with a throw of 33'1.25.

Amber Donnelly will throw the javelin on Saturday morning and Christina Fenske will compete in the high jump in the afternoon. In the throws, Kara Boatman, Lynee Pina and Joy Hunt will be competing for the Panthers.
