TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - North Dakota State junior Ted Rud claimed the decathlon title at the Florida State Relays after posting a personal best score of 7,261 points. Sophomore Weston Leutz was second with a personal best score of 7,190 points.
Rud and Leutz both cracked the 7,000-point mark for the first time and are now ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, on the NDSU all-time performance charts.
Rud won two of today's five events: the discus and the 1,500 meter run. His winning throw in the discus was 139 feet 6 inches, while his 1,500 time was 4:27.78. Rud was second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.67. He was also second in the pole vault after clearing 13-11 1/4 and the javelin with a throw of 162-6.
Leutz won the 110 hurdles in a time of 14.46 and also took the top spot in the pole vault with a mark of 14-11. He was second in the discus after making a throw of 119-3. Leutz was third in the javelin (161-1) and fourth in the 1,500 (5:07.06).
The Bison continue the outdoor season with the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. April 2-3.
