Jesse Cherry placed seventh in a highly-competitive 10,000-meter race late Friday night, running an HPU-record time of 28:44.05 at the Stanford Invitational. Seniors
Cole Atkins and
Josh Morgan also recorded career bests in the 10,000 and 1,500-meter, respectively.
"Jesse got out front and led most of the race," said HPU head coach
Mike Esposito. "28:44 is a really solid time and will set him up well for later in the season. We'll take it."
Cherry was in the fastest section of the 10,000-meter and led most of the race en route to his 28:44.05. That bested his own HPU record of 28:59.16, which he set at the 2009 Stanford Invitational. Michigan's Lex Williams won the race in 28:34.28.
Atkins and sophomore
Neal Darmody ran in the next section of the 10,000-meter. Atkins placed fourth in the section with a career-best 29:20.77 and Darmody came in 26th at 30:25.03, also a career-best.
High Point University began competition at the Stanford Invitational Friday afternoon with Morgan running a career-best 3:49.16 to place third in his heat of the 1,500-meter. Shortly after, junior
Jevin Monds placed seventh in his section of the 1,500-meter with a time of 3:54.18.
"Josh fell behind with 400 meters to go and he closed really strong down the final stretch to run his career best," said HPU head coach
Mike Esposito. "He can go faster if he runs the right type of race. Jevin was in good position in his heat but he didn't have a strong finish."
