Cougar Jumpers Highlight Strong Team Performance at Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. - College of Charleston jumpers recorded several strong marks to rewrite school history books on the final day of the Duke Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Freshman Jelain McArthur (Laurens, S.C./Laurens District) broke the 100-meter hurdles school record twice in one afternoon. After placing second out of 61 athletes in the preliminaries with a record-breaking time of 14.11 seconds, McArthur shaved another two-hundredths of a second off her time to finish third in the finals. The rookie owns the six fastest times in school history which she set in the last four meets.

Junior Isabel Boersma (Franklin, Tenn/Ravenwood) placed 22nd in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.15 seconds. Junior Brynne Johnson (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) set a new personal record time of 15.94 seconds.

McArthur also performed well in the long jump. She led four Cougars with a team-best jump of 18'½" to finish 12th and tie for the second-best performance in school history. McArthur set the school record at the Shamrock Invitational on Mar. 18. Johnson recorded her second personal record of the day with a distance of 16'11½" on her second attempt.

Sophomore Emily Smith (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern) represented CofC in the high jump. She leapt a season-best height of 5'7" to place fourth out of 25 competitors. She is now tied with Samford's Chenelle Terry for the top jump in the Southern Conference.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Kristen Wolfe finished the race in 11:09.12, just seven seconds behind her career-best time. Wolfe's time placed her ninth of 24 runners. She completed the race 15 seconds faster than at the Shamrock Invitational on Mar. 18 and leads the SoCon in the event.

On the men's side, junior Trevor Sprague (Dunwoody, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) reclaimed the school record in the 3,000 meters while leading a pack of four Cougars. His time of 8:44.71 is six seconds faster than sophomore Christian Bailey's (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) record-breaking time at the Shamrock Invitational.

Bailey finished the10,000 meters in 31:59.20 to give him an eighth-place finish out of 28 runners. His time is the second-fastest in school history, just six seconds behind his own school record in the event.

Charleston competes in its final meet before the conference tournament on Apr. 10 when the team travels to Charlotte, N.C. for the Johnson C. Smith University Invitational.
