Davidson Places 14 on Winter SoCon Academic All-Conference Team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced its Academic All-Conference team for the 2009-10 winter season Tuesday, which included 14 Davidson student-athletes.
Ben Altman (wrestling), a math major, and Erin Lupfer (women's indoor track and field), undeclared, boasted the top grade point averages for Davidson at 3.87 and 3.82, respectively. Lupfer was one of five honorees from the women's track squad.
Davidson's men's indoor track team had four honorees, while wrestling had three. Seniors Alex Thompson and Bryant Barr represented the women's and men's basketball teams, respectively.
A total of 160 student-athletes, representing all 12 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team and recorded a 3.56 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The winter season included men's and women's basketball, wrestling and men's and women's indoor track and field.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the winter season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the recently-concluded winter campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
A pair of student-athletes, UNC Greensboro track athlete Joey Thompson and Georgia Southern women's basketball player Samantha Williams, boasted perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs.
The league's indoor track and field teams supplied the most student-athletes to the team, including 71 women and 33 men. Women's basketball (32 players) was also well represented. Western Carolina led all schools with 25 honorees followed by Appalachian State (18) and Elon (16).
