CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston freshman Jelain McArthur (Laurens, S.C./Laurens District) has been named March's Southern Conference Track Athlete of the Month by league officials.
McArthur has won the Southern Conference weekly award three times in the past month; twice for track and once for field accomplishments. The rookie sprinter/jumper opened the outdoor season by winning the 100-meter hurdles at the Palmetto Invitational with a school record-setting time of 14.75 seconds on Mar. 12. She also finished second in the 200 meters (25.52) and the triple jump (38'3½").
McArthur shaved almost a half-second off her hurdles time the following weekend at the Shamrock Invitational where she placed second with a time of 14.20 seconds. She also finished the 200 meters in 25.51 seconds and came in second in the long jump with a school-record performance of 18'4¾".
The freshman broke a third school record at the Raleigh Relays on Mar. 26-27 when she leapt a distance of 39'5" in the tripe jump. Her new record was also a high mark for the Southern Conference this season.
Elon's Urysla Cotton's received the Southern Conference Field Athlete of the Month award. Cotton won the shot put at the Coastal Carolina Invitational on Mar. 12-13 with a toss of 44'9¾". She currently leads the SoCon rankings.
The women's track & field team competes in one final meet before conference championships on Saturday at the Johnson C. Smith University Invitational in Charlotte, N.C.
