ROCK HILL, S.C. – Three runner-up finishes led the Davidson men's track & field team to a third-place finish in the Carolina's Cup hosted by Winthrop University Friday night at the Irwin Belk Track.

Appalachian State (237 points) won the quad meet, which also featured host Winthrop (second place, 135.5 points) and Gardner-Webb (fourth, 79.5). The Wildcats took third with 103 points.

Freshman Demetrios Pagonis ran the fifth-best 3000-meters in Davidson history, clocking a personal-best 8 minutes, 35.19 seconds en route to a second place finish.

Junior Jin-Han Justin Song and freshman Shane Lakes also earned second-place finishes. Song led four Wildcat entries in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.62. Melaku Teka (50.79) followed in fourth. Lakes' mark of 38 feet, 4 ¾ inches (11.70m) in the triple jump was good for second.

Sophomore Taylor Martin continued to impress in the 400-meter hurdles, almost shaving a full second off his personal-best set last week, with a time of 55.96 to place fourth and move up Davidson's top-10 performers list.

Martin, James Tolleson, Teka and Song combined for a Davidson top-10 performance in the 4x400-meter relsay, placing third in 3:20.92.

Junior Bryce Jones also placed fourth with a personal-best and Davidson top-10 performance in the pole vault. Jones topped 13-11 ½ (4.25m) and also led the Wildcats in the 100-meter dash in 11.10.

Juniors Peter Bruton and Charlie Schmitt led the 'Cats in the 800- (fourth, 1:54.88) and 1500-meter (fourth, 4:03.93) runs, respectively.

Davidson will compete again Saturday at the Johnson C. Smith University Invitational in Charlotte.
