Tanui qualifies at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- ACU distance runner Cleophas Tanui finished a strong 11th in the 10,000 meters late Thursday night at the Penn Relays, posting a provisional qualifying time for the outdoor championship meet in the process.

Tanui covered the 10,000-meter track at historic Franklin Field in 30 minutes, 25.08 seconds to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II outdoor championship meet, which is scheduled for May 20-22 in Charlotte, N.C.

On Friday at the Penn Relays, Desmond Jackson finished sixth in qualifying in the 100 meters in a legal-wind 10.53 seconds to better his previous provisional qualifying mark of 10.57 seconds.  Jackson will run in Saturday's 100 meter championship final.

Also on Friday, Ramon Sparks was 10th in the long, but his mark of 23-3.25 was with a wind over the allowable limit.

The Wildcats finished 16th in the 4x200 relay in 1:25.57 and 26th in the 4x100 relay in 41.64.  The quartet of Jackson, Sparks, Kevin Johnson and Jordan Geary ran in both races.

On the women's side, Wanda Hutson was 13th in the 100 meters in 11.77 seconds, while the 4x200 relay team of Huston, Lynette Atkinson, Kim Prather and Sydney Smith was 20th in 1:38.14.

Sparks will compete in the triple jump and Jackson in the 100 meters on Saturday.
