Senior Josh Morgan won the 800-meter and junior TJ Brancaccio won the pole vault to lead the High Point University men's track & field team at the second-annual HPU VertKlasse Meeting on Sunday evening at Vert Stadium.

"It was a really good race for Josh, especially since he had to lead most of it," said HPU head coach Mike Esposito. "It was also good to get a win from TJ in the pole vault. We were really happy that HPU alum Taylor Milne made the trip down and he obviously ran well in the 5,000. To have our Olympian here really helped make the meet special. It was a really good event."

Morgan took the 800-meter in 1:51.44, using his typically strong finish to beat out Virginia Tech's Ryan Hagen (1:51.88). Also in that event, junior Corey Grove took 12th in 1:57.95 and senior Josh Cashman took 14th in 1:58.18.

Brancaccio cleared 14-3.25 to win the pole vault in windy conditions.

Taylor Milne, a 2005 HPU alum who competed in the 1,500-meter at the 2008 Olympics for Canada, won the 5,000-meter in 14:10.15. Behind Milne, HPU senior Cole Atkins placed second in 14:42.40 and sophomore Neal Darmody took seventh in 15:10.93.

Junior Justin Conaway sprinted to a third-place finish with a time of 10.95 in the 100-meter dash and junior Jevin Monds took third in the 1,500-meter in 3:51.78. Freshman #Dakota Peachee placed eighth in the 1,500-meter in 3:55.59.

Freshman Josh Pelletier threw the javelin 187-4 to place third.

Sophomore Ben AuYeung placed fourth in both the high jump and shot put and sophomore Sebastien Bonnot placed fifth in the 400-meter.

The name “VertKlasse” is based on the Weltklasse Zürich meet (pronounced VELT-class ZUR-ick, German for World Class Zurich), a famed international meet held annually in Switzerland. The name “Vert” was added in honor of one of HPU's greatest benefactors, Richard Vert, for whom Vert Stadium is named. Vert was a member of the HPU cross country and track teams in the 1960s.
