ATLANTA- With just two weeks to go before the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, Kennesaw State women’s track and field will put themselves up against some of the top competition in the south on Saturday when they challenge Georgia Tech, Georgia and Clemson in a four-way dual meet at the George C. Griffin Track at Georgia Tech.

Coach Don McGarey’s squad, who will be trying to capture their first A-Sun outdoor title since they began the program in 2005, have goals that go beyond winning conference championships.

Being eligible for NCAA Division I regional and national competition for the first time, the Owls are looking to put as many of their individuals as they can into the NCAA East Region Championship, which will run May 27-29 in Greensboro, N.C. In order to qualify, an athlete or relay team must have a score that ranks in the top-48 in the region at the regular season’s end. As it currently stands, two Owls are in the top-48 in their event, while a few more are close.

Juniors Mackenzie Howe (10,000 Meters) and Jill Arthur (Triple Jump) are the two that, if the regular season ended today, would be making the trip to Greensboro. Senior Jakia Ragland, who is currently 53rd in the High Jump, Erin Sutton, who ranks 70th in the region in the 10,000 Meters, and freshman Michelle Quimby, who is 58th in the Pole Vault entering Saturday, have this meet as well as the A-Sun Championships to improve their standing.

Everyone competing on Saturday will certainly have the opportunity to strive to keep up with some of the best collegiate track and field has to offer. A total of 62 athletes between Clemson, Georgia and Georgia Tech are currently in the top-48 in the NCAA East Region in their respective events.

Georgia Tech’s Terri-Ann Grant and Clemson’s April Sinkler will certainly give Ragland a taste of the big-time in their event, as their top High Jump marks of 1.81 meters (5’11.25”) currently put them at 10th in the nation this season. Arthur, for her part, may want to take note of Clemson’s Patricia Mamona, who won the ACC’s Triple Jump title with a leap of 13.30 Meters (43’7.75”), the fourth best jump in the nation to date this year.

The event will also be a unique one for the Owls in that it will be scored as several different dual meets. Kennesaw State will see where they score individually against Clemson, Georgia Tech and Georgia.

Saturday’s event will begin at 11:45 a.m. with the Hammer Throw, and will conclude at 4 p.m. with the 4x400 Meter Relay. Live scoring will be available at deltatiming.com.
