ABILENE -- Desmond Jackson of Abilene Christian University sprinted to a 10.34 Saturday night in the 100 meters at Gray Stadium to move up to second in the nation in NCAA Division II as the Wildcats picked up two additional automatic qualifiers for the championship meet from both its men's and women's teams.

Jackson's quick 100 meters highlighted the annual Oliver Jackson Classic and was one of four victories for the Wildcat men's team.

Also, Tyler Fleet won the hammer throw with 189 feet, 11 inches, defending NCAA Division II champion Ramon Sparks took the triple jump at 51-1.5, and Amos Sang raced to a win in the 5,000 in 14:39.54.

The new automatic qualifiers for coach Roosevelt Lofton's team were Jackson in the 100 and Fleet in the discus at 176-4.  Sang's 5,000 effort is a new provisional qualifier along with Sparks' 24-5 in the long jump.

The NCAA Division II national meet will be May 27-29 in Charlotte, N.C.

The ACU women grabbed victories from its 400 relay team in 46.22 and defending NCAA Division II champion Linda Brivule in the javelin at 167-7, which improved her standing as the top thrower in Division II again this season.

Also winning for the Wildcat women were Amanda Clemons with 40-7 in the triple jump, Anais Belledant with 4:34.09 in the 1,500, and Kim Prather with 55.09 in the 400.

Both the women's new automatic qualifiers for NCAA Division II are triple jumpers, Clemons and Destinee Nixon with 40-6 for runner-up behind her teammate.

Two provisional qualifiers from the Wildcat women's team improved their marks in the hammer – Jessica Sloss with 177-1 and Paige Newby with 169-7.

In one of the top events of the meet, former Texas Tech all-America thrower Jason Young won a duel in the discus throw with Abilene Christian student Nick Jones.  Young threw 216-4, but Jones, two-time NCAA Division II champion, turned in his personal best at 199-10 during a redshirt season.

Only two ACU men, Andy Kokhanovsky and Cliff Felkins, have ever reached 200 feet in the discus throw.

Former ACU Wildcat Kevin Dilworth won the long jump at 24-6.25, and another Wildcat redshirt, hurdler Andrew McDowell, won the 110 hurdles in 14.22.

The ACU men's 400 relay team, in a bid to improve its 2010 best of 41.22, failed to make the second baton exchange and did not finish.

ACU and the other Lone Star Conference teams were competing at Gray Stadium in their final tuneup before the league meet May 7-9 in San Angelo.
