ACU men win 17th straight title

Final Results

SAN ANGELO – A remarkable performance by distance runner Amos Sang sparked Abilene Christian University to its 17th consecutive men's track and field championship on the final day of the Lone Star Conference meet Sunday.

Sang capped his weekend by leading a 1-2 Wildcat finish in the 5,000 meters to break a 185-185 tie in team scoring with host Angelo State University for a 17-point lead before the final event (1,600 relay).

The junior from Eldoret, Kenya, ran 15:01.10 after earlier in the day winning the 1,500 in 3:58.24 and the 800 in 1:54.39.  That followed his victory Saturday night in the 10,000 – giving him four LSC gold medals in less than 24 hours.

First-year coach Roosevelt Lofton's team won with 205 points to 195 for the runner-up Rams after ASU won the final relay in 3:09.13 – the fastest winning time since 1997.

It was the closest final standings since the Wildcats' streak began in 1993.  In 2001 the Wildcats won by 23 points over the Rams.

As expected, Angelo State dominated the women's division for the second straight year with 297 points to 204 for the runner-up Wildcats.  It was the fourth title in the last seven years for the Rambelles, led by another four-event winner, Aisha Adams.

It was the second-highest total ever for a women's team – behind the 331 by the Rambelles last year.

The ACU men also had a double winner Sunday in sprinter Desmond Jackson, junior from Midland who was a convincing winner in the 100 (10.31) and 200 (20.84).  His time in the 100 moves him to the top of the latest NCAA Division II qualifying list for the national meet May 27-29 in Charlotte, N.C.

Lofton's team had an eight-point lead starting the day, and it stretched the margin to as much as 29 points after a 2-3-5 finish in the 110 hurdles.  Tarleton State's Garrett Thomas led with 14.44 with Wildcat newcomer Kevin Johnson at 14.48 for second.

That gave ACU a lead of 142-113, but quartermiler James Howell led the ASU comeback.  He won the 400 in 46.13 – the fastest winning time since 45.8 by ACU's Ian Morris in 1988 – and finished second in the 200 in 20.93 to pull Rams even with the Wildcats before the 5,000.

The Wildcat women's team won five events Sunday, including a 2010 best of 45.70 in the 400 relay by Sydney Smith, Wanda Hutson, Joella Foster and Kim Prather.  Hutson also won the 100 in 11.47.

The Wildcats won two more throwing events to start the day.  National leader Linda Brivule won her third straight conference javelin title with 156-8, and Paige Newby was the discus winner in 156-9.  That gave ACU wins in four of the eight throwing events this weekend.

The other winner for the ACU women on Sunday was Anais Belledant, who captured the 5,000 in 18:21.93.
