Bulls Sign National Top-10 Hurdler

TAMPA - For the third year in a row the University of South Florida track and field program has signed one of the best hurdlers in the nation, as Cypress Creek High School product Camillo Calderon recently committed to USF and head coach Warren Bye.

According to DyeStat.com, Calderon ranks second in the nation in the 400 hurdles with a mark of 52.71, achieved at the 34th annual Golden South Classic May 29. He trails Roy Smith of Miami Northwestern High School, who ran a 52.40 also at the Golden South Classic.

Calderon also sits seventh overall in the 300 hurdles after going 36.85 at the Florida 4A state meet, where he placed second in the final to the nation's top runner, Cody Riggs of St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Riggs posted a time of 36.44 at the state meet for the nation's top time.

Three of the top seven times in the nation in the 300 hurdles are owned by runners who hail from Florida.

Calderon is also the second national top-10 signee for the 2010 class, joining women's triple jumper Marqueshia Stallworth. The Seminole Ridge High School product ranks sixth in the nation in the triple jump with a leap of 40-9, according to DyeStat.com.

Calderon follows in the footsteps of freshman Neamen Wise, who owned the second-fastest time in the nation in the 300 hurdles last season in 36.49 when he won the Florida 4A state title. Wise suffered a leg injury midway through the 2010 indoor season, which limited him most of the outdoor campaign.

The year before, in 2008, sophomore David Aristil ranked 13th in the nation in the 300 hurdles with a time of 37.20. Aristil recently completed his sophomore collegiate campaign when he placed fifth in the final of the 400 hurdles at the NCAA Championships, becoming USF's fifth-different All-American for the men's track and field team.

A Clermont, Fla., native, Calderon also runs for the Breakaway Track Club.

USF's newest recruit will join 13 other Bulls who signed National Letters of Intent, including three state champions and three more state runner-ups.
