JSU Track and Field Adds Nine For 2010-11

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State track and field coaching staff released its signing class for the 2010-11 academic year on Wednesday, unveiling a list of nine signees that will join head coach Steve Ray, assistant coach Asha Gibson and the Gamecocks beginning this fall.

“We are very excited about the potential and impact of this year's class,” Ray said. “This group is as talented if not more so than last year's class on the track and will match it in the classroom.”

The class includes Shamira Barrett (Adairsville, Ga.), Shelbee Carter (Gainesville, Ga.), Briennce Corbin (McDonough, Ga.), LeCresha Horton (Athens, Ala.), Savanna Knop (Cullman, Ala.), Shakeyla Murray (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), Taylor Prince (Guntersville, Ala.), Ashley Ricci (Bullard, Texas) and Kevyn Tracy (Austell, Ga.).

2010-11 JSU Track and Field Signees
Shamira Barrett
Adairsville High School (Adairsville, Ga.)

Sprints/Jumps
Barrett will join the Gamecocks after a stellar conclusion to her high school campaign at Adairsville High School. She is a Georgia State Class AA three-time champion in the 200m, with a personal best of 24.76. Barrett is also the 2010 state runner-up in both the 400m and long jump.

“Shamira is a fierce competitor. She has championship experience and is quite versatile. Her competitive spirit and athletic abilities will separate her from her competitors. She will be an immediate impact for the Gamecocks in the sprints.”

Shelbee Carter
Gainesville High School (Gainesville, Ga.)

Vertical/Horizontal Jumps
Carter is the reigning Class AAA Region 7 champion in the triple jump. At the state meet, she managed a fourth-place finish in that event with a jump of 36'2”.

“Shelbee is a versatile athlete with great ambition. She is very sound and once technical aspects are enhanced, she will be a scoring threat in each of her jump events.”

Briennce Corbin
Ola High School (McDonough, Ga.)

400m/Jumps
Corbin is a two-time Class AAAA Region AAAA champion in the 400m. She ran a personal best time of 57.08 at the Georgia State meet to gain a fourth place finish. Corbin also has personal bests in the high jump of 5'3” and long jump of 18'1”.

“Briennce is competitor of the utmost. Her determination and natural ability will set the tone for her accomplishments during her freshman campaign.”

LeCresha Horton
Athens High School (Athens, Ala.)

Sprints
Horton, of Athens High School, is the 2010 runner-up in both the 100m and 200m. She placed fourth at the Alabama State meet in the 200m. She has personal bests in the 100m and 200m of 12.5 and 25.5, respectively.

“LeCresha has the tools to be a good collegiate runner. With experience and fall training, she will develop into a driving force for us during the 2011 season and so on.”

Savanna Knop
Cullman High School (Cullman, Ala.)

Jumps
Knop, of Cullman High School, was the 2010 Class 5A Section 4 High Jump champion and will join the Gamecocks this fall. She currently has a person best of 5'2” in the high jump.

“Savanna will be a good addition to the vertical jumps. She will join a host of in-state freshmen athletes that has brought the JSU recruiting process back home. It is always great to find talented athletes in your state and provide them the opportunity to compete among friends and family.”

Shakeyla Murray
Tuscaloosa County High School (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)

Sprints/Jumps
Tuscaloosa County's Murray is the 2010 Class 6A runner-up in the long jump. She has personal bests in the long jump of 18'6 and the 200m of 24.74.

“Shakeyla is a self determined individual with leadership capabilities. She demonstrates the desire of being a student of the sport and will grow as an athlete accordingly. Shakeyla will provide much needed depth in both the sprint and jump events with her talent.”

Taylor Prince
Guntersville High School (Guntersville, Ala.)

Throws
Prince, of Guntersville, placed first in the discus at this year's Alabama State meet in Class 4A with a PR of 108'4”and added a fourth place finish in the javelin. She also placed third in the shot put.

“As a multi-talented athlete, Taylor will be a great addition to our throwing corps. I believe with her ability and hard work she will prove to be a valuable asset to our team and should be a factor in the conference.”

Ashley Ricci
Bullard High School (Bullard, Texas)

Jumps
A Texas State qualifier, Ricci will compete for the Gamecocks next year. As a Class 3A Region 3 high jump champion, Ricci has a personal best in that event of 5'4”.

“Ashley is a great pick-up in the vertical jump. She will provide depth and consistency in that event for us next year. She demonstrates a passion for her event and is team oriented.”

Kevyn Tracy
South Cobb High School (Austell, Ga.)

Mid-Distance
Tracy is the 2010 Class AAAAA Region 5 runner-up in the 800m. At the Georgia State meet Kevyn recorded a third place finish with a personal best of 2:15.80. She holds a personal best in the 300m hurdles and high jump of 46.83 and 5'0”.

“Kevyn will join our young distance group next year. She is a strong runner with great potential. She will be a serious threat in the 800m. She displays a great attitude and desire for training which is commendable.”
