Jones third in discus at meet


MIRAMAR, Fla. -- ACU junior Nick Jones finished third in the discus throw last week at the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Under-23 Track and Field Championships. at the Ansin Sports Complex.

Jones, competing for the USA for the first time in an international competition, took home the bronze medal, one of a record 74 medals won by the United States team in the competition.

Jones was third with a throw of 187 feet, 1 inch, which came on his fifth throw of the competition.   Jones' teammate, Mason Finley, won the gold medal with a mark of 195-6, and he was followed by Mexico's Mario Cota, who won the silver with a throw of 190-4.

Late last month in Des Moines, Iowa, Jones was one of three Wildcats who competed in the 2010 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium.

Jones finished 17th in the discus throw with a mark of 175-5 (53.47 meters).

Also competing at the USA Championships were Desmond Jackson (100 meters, 200 meters) and Ramon Sparks (triple jump).

Sparks -- the 2009 NCAA Division II outdoor national champion and 2010 NCAA Division II indoor national champion in the triple jump -- finished 11th in Iowa with a mark of 52 feet, 2.75 inches.

Jackson reached the semifinals of the 200 meters, finished 16h in the first round with a time of 21.19 and then 15th in the semifinals and 15th overall with a time of 21.20 seconds.  He didn't get out of the first round of the 100 meters, finishing 17th with a time of 10.56 seconds.
