Wildcats Open Season at Covered Bridge Invitational

BOONE, N.C. -- The Davidson women's cross country team opened the 2010 season with an eighth-place team finish at the Covered Bridge Invitational Friday evening on the campus of Appalachian State University.

The Wildcats' top finisher, senior Heather Conarroe finished 31st overall with a time of 19:17.32, followed by classmate Lauren Childs, who was 37th with a time of 19:21.94.

Sophomore Natalie Atabek was two spots behind, finishing 39th overall with a time of 19:24.13. Making her collegiate debut, freshman Megan Mavity finished 45th overall with a time of 19:30.20, and senior Sarah Cline rounded out the team scoring with a 50th-place time of 19:40.56.

North Carolina finished first overall with 49 total points, followed by ACC-foe Wake Forest with 57 points. SoCon-foe Appalachian State finished third with 72 points, followed by East Carolina (113), Florida State (134), High Point (141), Elon (192) and the Wildcats. Shorter (225) and King (281) rounded out the field.

The top two individual winners were freshman, as Wake Forest's Nicole Irving won the event with a time of 17:45.07, just ahead of North Carolina's Jacque Taylor (17:56.30). Appalachian State's Brittney Caudle was third with a time of 17:58.64, as the top three times went one-two-three.

The Wildcats will return to action when they travel to the Clemson Invitational Sept. 17.
