The High Point University women's cross country team placed sixth to open the season at the Covered Bridge Open on Friday at Appalachian State. The Panthers were led by sophomore Kaylyn Peck, who placed 12th overall.

"I'm very pleased with the way the women's team ran today," said HPU head coach Mike Esposito. "Kaylyn Peck has made an enormous jump, an enormous commitment and it showed today. It's a lot of fun to see that hard work start to pay off. Our spread from our first to fifth runner was about 1:05, which was very good. Our big emphasis today was to close well over the last 2K and we did that."

Peck finished the 5,000-meter course in 18:30.90. Next across the line for HPU was senior Emily Webb in 26th with a time of 19:07.63. One position behind her was sophomore Kelsey Hunt, who finished in 19:09.06. Nicole Irving from Wake Forest won the race in 17:45.07.

The Panthers' top five was finished out by freshman Kayleigh Perry and junior Kelsey Fraser. Perry took 37th in 19:20.96 and Fraser placed 45th in 19:27.93.

Freshman Audrey Malloy placed 49th in 19:35.78 and senior Monica Delizo placed 70th in 20:00.55. Sophomore Dani Paul placed 72nd in 20:09.37 and freshman Colleen Hollowood took 77th in 20:17.10. Rounding out the Panthers' finishers were Kelsey Paine in 93rd, senior Dianna Bell in 98th and junior Kelsey Hinchliffe in 101st.

North Carolina won the meet with 49 points, followed by Wake Forest (57), Appalachian State (72), East Carolina (113), Florida State (134), High Point (141), Elon (192), Davidson (202), Shorter (225) and King (281).

The Panthers will next race in the Big South Preview at Radford on Sept. 25. The meet will be on the same course as the Big South Championship on Oct. 30.
