Spain Paces Cardinals to 2nd-Place Finish

NORMAL, Ill. (Sept. 17, 2010) -
Its five scoring runners placing in the top 20, the North Central College men's cross country team turned in a second-place finish at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships on Friday at Weibring Golf Course.

The Cardinals, who entered the weekend ranked second among NCAA Division III institutions, totaled 51 points to finish behind only the University of Illinois, which came in ranked eighth in the NCAA Division I Midwest Region. The Illini put up a total of 25 points to claim the team trophy. The University of Illinois-Chicago placed third with 132 points.

North Central did manage to collect the individual championship, as Michael Spain finished the 8,000-meter (five-mile) course in 24 minutes, 23 seconds to place first overall, edging out Illinois' Colin Mickow by three seconds.

The Cardinals' next four finishers crossed the line within two seconds of each other, as Nathan Warstler placed 14th (25:36), Dan Kerley came in 15th (25:37), Matt Perez finished 16th (25:37) and Pat Lesiewicz was 17th (25:38).

North Central is idle until Oct. 1, when they travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational. The Cardinals will send a squad to the Carthage Invitational the same day.
