Cougars Compete Close to Home

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Since the College of Charleston men's and women's cross country teams don't have a true home meet this year, this weekend's Citadel Invitational at James Island County Park will be the closest they come to competing on familiar territory.

The men's race will start Saturday at 9:00a.m., while the women will toe the line at 9:45a.m.

Having not hosted a home meet in about five years, CofC head coach Amy Seago said she is excited about competing close to home.

"It's a great opportunity for us, since we practice at James Island County Park quite a bit," she said. "They are very familiar with the course and it feels like home to us. We can have some fans from around town and it will be good to have a home crowd."

The Cougars will see three teams from the Southern Conference in host school The Citadel, Furman and Georgia Southern. Charleston Southern will also compete in the meet.

Last weekend at the Asics-Winthrop Invitational junior Alexander Hill ran a great race, coming in fourth place with a time of 25:44, just two second off the CofC school record. Seago said she expects Hill can build on this race moving forward.

"His workouts have been going very well," she said. "Sometimes you just need that breakthrough race to give you confidence."

On the women's side Dena O'Brien continues to lead the Cougar squad as she improved on her career-best finishing second among South Carolina runners in 18:08 at the Asics-Winthrop Invitational. O'Brien's time ranks her 10th in the all-time record book.
