Cougars Set to Battle Top Competition in Charlotte

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Coming off two runner-up finishes and an individual first-place performance in their last competition, the College of Charleston men's and women's cross country teams travel to Charlotte, N.C. for the Charlotte Invitational Friday afternoon at McAlpine Park.

The women's 5k race is set for 4:00pm., with the men's 8k race to follow at 4:30p.m.

CofC Head Coach Amy Seago said she thinks her teams are in a good position to do well.

"We like this meet," she said. "It's been good for us. It's been a good confidence builder in many ways. There will be good teams, so the competition level will be very high."

Among the high level competition will be Virginia Tech, Clemson and South Carolina.

Many of the Cougar athletes are familiar with the course they will be competing on, since it hosts a high level high school meet, the South Regional for the FootLocker Cross Country Championships. Junior Christian Bailey grew up in Charlotte and said he has raced on the course about 20 times and practiced on it many more.

Last week at the Citadel Invitational, both the CofC men's and women's teams placed second. Freshman Dena O'Brien highlighted the day with an individual first-place finish. O'Brien was recognized by the conference office as runner of the week for her performance.

After this meet the Cougar will have only one more competition left before they travel to Boone, N.C. for the Southern Conference Championships.

The full field this weekend includes the following teams: Wofford, Belmont Abbey, Virginia Tech, Davidson, Western Carolina, South Carolina, Barton College, Lees McRae College, Pfeiffer College, South Carolina Beufort, Georgia Southern, Converse College, VMI, Clemson, Presbyterian, Georgia State, East Tennessee State, College of Charleston, Milligan College, Gardner-Webb, North Greenville, Wake Forest, Savannah State and Charlotte.
