Freshman Harriers Third at Carthage Invite

SOMERS, Wis. (Oct 1, 2010)-- Sending a squad comprised entirely of freshman, the North Central College women's cross country team turned in a third place finish at the Carthage College Invitational on Friday afternoon with two Cardinals finished among the top 10.

Jacki McKown led the pack for the Cardinals, finishing the 6,000-meter course in 24:51.2, placing sixth. Tanya Starkey placed two spots back in eighth in 24:57.3 while Ann Middleton and Britney Kravish finished back-to-back in 11th and 12th places, respectively. Middleton covered the course in 25:31.3 while Kravish crossed the tape in 25:35.4. Heather Kearley rounded out the squad's top five, placing 33rd overall in 27:13.3.

Marquette University's Holly Robertson claimed top honors at the meet, finishing in 23:31.0 and helping the Golden Eagles win the invite, scoring 18 points. College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival and host Carthage was second with 50 points while the Cardinals, who raced only freshman at the invitational, finished third, racking up 61 points. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh was fourth (91) while Harper College and Millikin University competed but did not register a team score.

North Central, ranked seventh in the Central Region by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, competes as a split-squad next weekend, sending select individuals to Waverly, Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 9, for the Wartburg College Pre-Nationals Invitational while the rest of the team will compete on Friday at the Benedictine Invitational in Lisle, Ill.
