CHICAGO, Ill. - Senior Mary Goldkamp (Florissant, Mo./McCluer North) tied her career-best 5K time and finished third to pace the women's cross country team at the 38th annual Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational, while fellow senior Andrew Wieser (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) turned in a career-best time to lead the men's cross country team Saturday.

Goldkamp helped Bradley tie Missouri Valley Conference rival Northern Iowa for seventh in a field of 41 teams, while Wieser was 19th overall to help the men's squad finish 16th in the 41-team field.  Three of Bradley's top finishers on the women's side were freshmen, while the men's top four finishers were all seniors.

Goldkamp was one of five Braves on the women's side to turn in career bests, matching her career-best 5K time of 17:48 set last month at the Illinois Intercollegiates.  She finished 15 seconds behind individual champion Jessica Pearo of McMaster and was six seconds back of second-place finish Audrey Huth of Northwestern in third place.

"Mary ran an outstanding race today," Bradley men's and women's cross country head coach Marc Burns said.  "She put herself up front from the gun and battled the whole race.  This was a big step for Mary as she continues to position herself as a front runner in the Valley."

Freshman Cassie Lohmeier (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) turned in a season-best time of 18:39 to finish 32nd in the field and fellow freshman Whitney Schumacher (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) was close behind, crossing the line at 18:49 to finish 39th.  Sophomore Emily Gustafson (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) saw her first action of the season and clocked a 19:25 to finish 110th, while freshman Sarah Higgins (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) rounded out the scoring for Bradley in her debut.  Higgins was 128th in the 511-person field with a time of 19:32.

"Our women competed hard today," Burns added.  "We were strong through three runners but need to close the gap from three to five in order to achieve our team goals at the end of the year.  It was great to have Emily Gustafson back in the lineup and have Sarah Higgins make her Bradley debut today.  Our mission in two weeks is to defend our home turf and close the gap from one to five."

For the third time in three outings this season, Wieser was Bradley's top finisher and he has led the Braves in six of the last 10 races.  Wieser broke his previous career-best 8K time by one second, finishing 19th at 25:38.  Fellow senior Zach Bowling (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth/Danville Area C.C.) clocked a 26:04 to finish 59th, while senior Brian Tyne (Polo, Ill./Polo) turned in a season-best 26:56 to finish 99th overall.

"Andrew led the way for our men's team again today," Burns said.  "He was strong throughout the race but I would like to see him catch a spirit for breaking 25 minutes and see himself as a guy who can win races.  The guys just did not compete as well as we would have like them to today.  We missed out on a nice opportunity to challenge a couple of Valley teams today and will be ready to fight hard at the Bradley Classic in two weeks."

Senior Billy Miller (Metamora, Ill./Metamora/Illinois Central) was one of three men's runners to turn in career-best efforts, crossing the line at 26:25 to finish 102nd.  Freshman Thomas Harayda (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) ran a season-best 26:47 and was 150th to round out the scoring for the Braves.  Junior Chris Frank (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin) clocked a career-best 27:29 and two other Braves turned in season-best times.

On the women's side, freshman Kayla Austin (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) turned in a season-best time of 19:53 and four other Braves turned in career-best 5K times paced by junior Sarah Hallstein's (Minier, Ill./Olympia) time of 20:28.

Both the men's and women's cross country teams return to action Friday, Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. when they host the seventh-annual Bradley Classic at Newman Golf Course.
