SPARTANBURG, S.C – Davidson men's cross country junior Ryan Hopkins was named the Southern Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Month for September, the league office announced Friday.

He was twice named the SoCon Men's Runner of the Week during the month.

Hopkins (Greenwich, Conn.) most recently broke his own Davidson cross country record, completing the E.P. Tow Sawyer State Park 8K course in 24:07.48 to lead the Wildcat men to a 15th place finish in a field of 38 teams at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic Saturday.

He finished second in 24:19.02 at the Clemson Invitational two weeks prior, besting the previous Davidson all-time 8K record set by Lance Harden in 2009. Hopkins' performance helped lead the 'Cats to a convincing first-place finish.

Hopkins placed third overall to lead the Davidson men's cross country team to a fifth-place finish in the season opening Covered Bridge Open, hosted by Appalachian State September 3. He completed the 6400m course in 19:44.59 seconds.

The Wildcats will return to action Friday, October 15 at the Royal Cross Country Challenge in McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte, N.C.
